It can be so easy to get caught up in all of the things there is to do at the Jersey Shore over the summer. I like to think there are so many options that some people feel overwhelmed and just don’t come so that there’s more room for us locals (lol). While that’s a little farfetched of a hope, I still like to make sure that I am making the most out of mine and my friends time, by visiting some of our favorite local spots that always provide us with a good time, no matter what.

I know it might be a sin to put them out there, but I wanted to share. Also, let it be known that some of these places are probably known by most locals. Honestly, if you don’t know them and you’re a local, I’d be shocked. I also have a lot of reservations about putting my beach out there in the open because, you know, it’s my beach and I don’t want anyone else there (also lol). It’s all about sharing the good though, right?

Without further delay, there are some of my stops on the Jersey Shore that I consider must have local fun for a couple of days in the sun.

Patio Bar @ The Wharfside

Patio has been a favorite for my friends and I since we were old enough to drink, honestly. Some of our parents went there, some of our other friends introduced it to us. It’s always just been a neighborhood staple. It’s honestly nestled in this cute little corner of Point Pleasant Beach right behind Jack Bakers and near the Lobster Shanty, which are two other great local spots.

If you’re just over 21, make sure you bring ID, they always check it. Sometimes they even check two forms of ID. They’ll give you a wristband and then it’s off to the relaxing patio that’s often touting live music. The atmosphere is so much fun and there’s just so much energy. The drinks are good and the food is perfect for peckish drinking escapades. It’s also a perfect spot to bring a family if you wanted to have just casual drinks but you also have under 21ers in your party.

Did I not mention that you can also dock your boat right there? Patio is right on the water with a sandbar so close you can see the people out there having a great time. It’s all great fun every single time we go.

Bay Head Beach

There’s really nothing much to say here except it is the best beach on the Jersey Shore. I mean, honestly. When i was a kid I used to take badges at another location in Monmouth County and it’s a beach I spent a lot of time at as a kid and I still love it, but nothing beats Bay Head to me, and it’s for so many reasons. I’ll explain one of those reasons here:

Bay Head is quiet. I love the fact that because there are no attractions, bathrooms, coolers allowed, etc., Bay Head stays nice and peaceful and really it’s just the locals that come. I love it so munch, mainly for that reason. As I sit right now on the train to work, I can only think about shutting my eyes and laying back down on that beach as I did this weekend. Sigh.

River Rock Marina Bar & Restaurant

This has always been a favorite for friends and me. I think it’s really fun to also see generations going in and out of these places as well. For instance, my brother who is 5 years younger than me, goes to Patio and River Rock. For some reason, I think that’s cool. I think it just means these establishments are doing a great job and keeping things good, fun, relevant and delicious.

River Rock used to be called Marina Bar & Grill. It was way before Hurricane Sandy. It used to be super cool that Marina would have a huge brunch every Sunday and I miss that. Now that it’s River Rock, I still love it. The food is good for dinner on a random weekend night (or during the week) and then right after, you can either move to the bar or dance on the floor. River Rock has awesome outdoor seating at both a deck right over the water and in the sand at a “Tiki Bar” like atmosphere with lights and palm trees. Ugh, pure bliss.

Charlie's of Bay Head

This is a new favorite for me! The establishment opened up in Bay Head earlier this year and it’s exactly what the community needed. Honestly, I’ve always thought about how Bay Headed needed more of an elevated dining experience as there are a couple of places to eat, but not something like this.

The menu is cool. There are a couple of things that you know you’ve seen a million times and then some interesting drinks. I was a little weary of the quality of the food but while we were waiting for our table this weekend, we got to chatting with this man about how the food was pretty good!

To see for ourselves, we ordered three different appetizers, all good! We got an antipasto plate, hummus, and a burrito & heirloom tomato cappers which were all very nice. We also indulged in a Lychee Martini which I had been dying to try at least SOMEWHERE because it’s been trendy as haaaale, and I finally got the opportunity. It was good! The drink was strong which was also nice. After our Lychee Martini, we decided to just stick with traditional Apple Martinis. Also strong which is always great.

We ordered a pizza for our main because we weren’t that hungry after three apps. The pizza fell flat in our opinion (omg I can’t take what I did there). For some reason, the flavor just wasn’t there. The crust tasted like nothing and it just seemed like it wasn’t fresh.

Overall, we really liked the experience. The ambiance is really nice, the appetizers and drinks were good. The antipasto plate was my favorite, it was very reminiscent of charcuterie and I would die for charcuterie, sooooo, you got me.

Comstock Yacht Sales & Marina

I include this on the list for one reason and one reason only. I know obviously not everyone has a boat. I don’t have a boat. For some reason though, this marina is just one of my favorite places to go and reflect, relax and look at everything. By everything I mean the sunset, the boats, the water. Everything is absolutely beautiful. Everything about this marina is so calming to me as you can see from this photo. I snapped it pretty much RIGHT after a rain storm (pretty sure it may have still been raining).
